Phonics Step-Up Game (U–Z & Vowel Teams Edition)

For this activity, students used phonics templates featuring letters U to Z and vowel patterns ow, ou, ue, ui, and u_e. To make the review more interactive and exciting, we turned it into a movement-based classroom game that kept everyone engaged and motivated.

How to Play

1. Pair up the students.
   Each pair receives the same phonics template.

2. Start with paper–scissors–stone.
   Students play one quick round. The winner gets the chance to read a word from the template.

3. Read and step up.
   If the winner reads the selected word correctly, they take one step forward.

4. Earn points.
   A student needs to complete five steps to gain one point.

5. Repeat and rotate.
   Students continue playing, switching partners whenever needed to keep the game lively.

This activity helps reinforce phonics skills while allowing students to move, compete, and stay fully engaged during class.
